Haunting melodies of an ancient past: classical themes in the work of the modern Greek composer Eugenia Manolides
01.12.2011
![]() |
This academic paper, delivered at the Re-Creation: Musical Reception of Classical Antiquity conference at the University of Iowa (30th October 2011), explored Eugenia Manolides¢ musical appropriation of the classical past in her oeuvre. It examined her output specifically in terms of its dialogue with ancient Greek culture and addressed both the creativity of the artist and the uses to which it is put in the wider cultural field. The paper analyzed the relationship between ancient and modern themes and modalities in the practitioner¢s oeuvre with reference to two representative musical examples of her creative re-working of the classical past. In the epinician Hymn to the Olympic Victors, which is included in both Epos (2005) and in the Olympic Symphonic Concert Two Cultures, One Spirit (Beijing - 2008), the artist celebrates the importance of the Games in both the ancient and the modern world. In the ballet Gaia (2004) Manolides creatively adapted the classical myth of Gaia, the personification of Earth found in ancient Greek literature, and transformed it into a modern ecological parable. Both case studies demonstrate the importance of the dialogue with the classical past for Manolides and the ways in which this relationship is re-imagined and communicated by a living artist who has made it an integral part of her music.
